can't get libXmu.a

Postby jeepster » 2011/12/03 13:11:01

I was trying to install a software package, which needs libXmu.a (X miscellaneous utilities). I have searched in 3 search engines for some clues. One advice was to install libxmu-devel, but that did not help.
I did yum groupinstall "X Software Development" but still no solution. I have libXmu.so but not libXmu.a
Any ideas what RPM would be hiding this elusive creature?

No CentOS package provides libXmu.a. Sounds like you are trying to use something incompatible with CentOS/RHEL, and likely obsolete. If you tell us what you are trying to install perhaps we can offer some suggestions or alternatives.

Actually, it is Centos 4.8 (and Oracle or Scientific Linux 4.8 too), but vanished from later versions.
It is for a rather obsure package that was generously donated to open-source world by an oil company.
Actually it seems more like a millionaire driving a Maybach has dumped a dead pig in a gunny sack
and said "be grateful - it is edible!".
An equivalent software suite would cost tens of thousands of dollars to buy.
So the question is whether is is worth weeks tearing your hair out and getting red
eyes to discover there is no such thing as a free lunch.

I must have searched later versions previously, as I don't have CentOS-4 system running. I find /usr/X11R6/lib64/libXmu.a from 4.9/updates/x86_64/RPMS/xorg-x11-devel-6.8.2-1.EL.70.x86_64.rpm or /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.a from 4.9/updates/i386/RPMS/xorg-x11-devel-6.8.2-1.EL.70.i386.rpm

If you need more help building please provide a link to the sources.
