Support for Tenda W311N USB wireless, compile fails

Postby dwynter » 2009/03/18 19:02:59

Hi,

I am running Centos 4.6 on a Dual Opteron motherboard. I need to add support for this recent Tenda W311N wireless network USB adapter. I followed the instructions here: http://ubunturt2870.pbwiki.com/FrontPage which is the only instruction I could find to build the device driver for this device.

But I get to the "sudo make" command and get this error:

gcc -g bin2h.c -o bin2h
make[1]: execvp: gcc: Permission denied
make[1]: *** [all] Error 127

There is very little when you google "execvp: gcc: Permission denied" and what is there is not clear about what the problem is.

Any pointers?

Thx.

I have now. A few questions come up. I am new to this, never having built a kernel or pathed one.

I assume that this driver will be a new module?
How do I find out what the module name is? ( Is this something I discover from the config.mk?)
Is installing a new module the only way to get support of this device?
Where do I find out which USB wireless network adapters are already supported by Centos 4.6, just in case i make a mess of this it might be easier t fo rme to buy a adapter already supported.

Thx.

According to the link in your original post, the source file builds a kernel module named "rt2870sta". When I tried it on a CentOS-5 box, it compiled just fine. However, it failed under CentOS-4 (actually 4.7). Unless you can find a driver that works for CentOS-4 (RHEL-4), this is not going to be easy.

Upgrading your system to CentOS-5 may be one option. However, as you suspected, finding something that is known to work would be the best option.

Hi,

I upgraded my system to Centos 5.2. But the system hung with 15 minutes to go on Dick 1. So I had to reboot. It completed the Upgrade without errors the second time.

But when I rebooted grub only shows the old images from Centos 4. I enter grub and ran the command "cat /boot/grub/grub.conf", whose existance I found out about reading section 39.6 of the user guide. But it returns an error "Error 15: File not found" Reluctant to proceed without understanding why this config file is not in existance. I assume I could use the command "grub>configfile/boot/grub/grub.conf" to create one from scratch, but that does not seem right. Suggested next steps?

btw when I let Centos 4 boot is fails all over the place I assume because the system is now 5.2.

Thx.

As suggested in your other thread
http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/vie ... 5&forum=37
save what you can from the CentOS 4 mess and do a fresh install of 5.
