kmod-atl1e Centos and Red Hat

Postby maul0r » 2012/02/21 10:39:44

Hi,

first I do realize this is a CentOs Forum and not a Red Hat forum. I just have a quick question:

I understand RedHat and CentOS are virtually the same - CentOS is free and thus removes the branding, while RedHat is not. If that is correct then something strikes me. I reference this thread:

my old atl1e thread

I got both (NIC and Videocard) up and running in CentOs 6.2.

Switching to RedHat - I did get the video card up and running - however the ethernet card won't work although the same kmod driver is installed.

Is there an easy explanation?

No reason I know of. In fact the ELRepo build systems run RHEL. Please explain "won't work" in detail.

Moving the thread to Social as the question is about RHEL and not CentOS.

Good Morning,

had a hard time finding my thread again :-)

Essentially just like my first ethernet thread.

Maybe this has something to do with it, but I had to manipulate yum to get it working:

when starting yum I always had the problem that some ftp server was timing out (something about error can't change path or directory) therefore I went to

/etc/yum.repos/rhel-source.repo

and disabled those (as i only wanted to download from elrepo anyway it didnt sound like a too bad idea)

then I did the same thing just like in centos:

Code: Select all
yum install kmod-atl1e
yum install kmod-nvidia
init 6

it reboots - i boot to runlevel 3, remove kmod-nvidia, reboot but to runlevel 5

result:

Videocard works
ethernet card doesnt

Code: Select all
[root@HOSTNAME ~]# ifconfig eth0
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found
[root@HOSTNAME ~]# lsmod | grep atl1e
atl1e                  74988  0

Not sure what the magic about installing and removing the Nvidia driver has to do with the network, and disabling Red Hat repos seems very questionable. You should be able to provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh" and showing us the output file, just as on CentOS; however, if paying for Red Hat support you should consider using it.
