Bootable Software RAID 1

Post by mdamda » 2014/11/18 10:49:23

Hello all,

I've been trying to get a bootable RAID1 configuration on CentOS7 for about 3 days without any success:

I have tried the following blogs (of course with a few changes esp because of UI and some settings differences):
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/SoftwareRAIDonCentOS5
http://binblog.info/2014/10/25/centos-7-on-md-raid-1/

Basically, I was able install /boot on a RAID 1 volume. I know this is not officially supported, but we have this setup running similarly on a CentOS 6.4 machine to enable us to keep things running in the event of single disk failure, and I would have installed 6.4 if it there wasn't a little incompatibility with this our new hardware configuration. CentOS 7 installs without any problems but always gets stuck when booting with a degraded RAID.

I've experimented getting grub2 installed on both hard disks (sda/sdb), but can't seem to boot when I'm simulating a hard disk failure (disconnecting the cable). What confuses me is that computer refuses to boot when EITHER of the RAID1 drives are disconnected, shows the "7" loading screen with the spinning loading circle and shows this message afterwards:
Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view
system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again
to boot into default mode.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):
Not sure what I'm doing wrong or what the workaround is for CentOS 7.

Can anyone point me to the right direction?

Details:
Mount - Partition Type - File System Type
Swap - RAID1 - swap
/boot - RAID 1 - ext3
/ - RAID 1 - ext3
/home - RAID 1 - ext3
Bootloader installed on sda, but I used grub2-install /dev/sdb to install this on sdb as well. Verified that grub is there by trying to boot with sda not plugged in and going to the grub screen where you can choose OS's and go to the grub command line.

Thank you very much!

Hello all -- just to update,

I was able to get CentOS 6.6 running as a happy medium between my hardware that would not accept 6.4, and my lack of technical expertise that made me unable to set this up in Centos 7.

Still looking to upgrade some of our older servers in the future to 7 and will be continuing to research on this as maintaining a bootable RAID1 is important for uptime (keeping /boot on a flash drive or a single drive just doesn't sound right to me) :)

I had the same problem but no solution... so I decided to reinstall CentOS 7 with different partitioning.

I'm trying to use this partition layout and it's working:

Code: Select all

[root@localhost ~]# df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/md126 140978396 1468420 132325600 2% /
/dev/md127 495780 122861 343227 27% /boot
Removed SDA:

Code: Select all

[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md126 : active raid1 sda1[1]
      143359872 blocks super 1.2 [2/1] [_U]
      bitmap: 2/2 pages [8KB], 65536KB chunk

md127 : active raid1 sda2[1]
      511936 blocks super 1.0 [2/1] [_U]

unused devices: <none>
So RAID1 is working only with two partitions (/boot & /)... you can't use another RAID1 partitions, e.g. /var

Hi,

i think you have something else different.
If you still have the nonworking system, can you please post the output of the following commands:
(If it does not boot, use boot from DVD into "rescue" and chroot. Or try to bring it up with "mdadm --assemble --scan" at the dracut prompt)

# cat /etc/mdadm.conf
# blkid
# lsblk -f
# mdadm --examine --scan
# mdadm --detail --scan
# cat /etc/fstab

Best Regards
Matthias

Hello,

I've installed it on other two HDDs. I've setup RAID1 and it is working fine until I remove one drive (it doesn't matter which drive, sda or sdb).

Thank you for help!!

Here are files/scans after I removed one drive (sdb):

so your /var is having the problem.

What does "mdadm --examine --verbose /dev/sda5" say?

Can you manually start the /var array?
mdadm --assemble --run --verbose --uuid=1017d6c0:7a812ebf:170a75a2:b7bf5be3
or
mdadm --assemble --scan

Hello,

thanks for your help. This is "mdadm --examine --verbose /dev/sda5":

Code: Select all

/dev/sda5:
          Magic : a92b4efc
        Version : 1.2
    Feature Map : 0x1
     Array UUID : 1017d6c0:7a812ebf:170a75a2:b7bf5be3
           Name : localhost:var
  Creation Time : Sat Dec 6 20:17:08 2014
     Raid Level : raid1
   Raid Devices : 2

 Avail Dev Size : 760303616 (362.54 GiB 389.28 GB)
     Array Size : 380151616 (362.54 GiB 389.28 GB)
  Used Dev Size : 760303232 (362.54 GiB 389.28 GB)
    Data Offset : 262144 sectors
   Super Offset : 8 sectors
          State : clean
    Device UUID : 13a601a6:31c4a065:c4058266:64f286bb

Internal Bitmap : 8 sectors from superblock
    Update Time : Sun Dec 7 13:29:17 2014
       Checksum : 16656854 - correct
         Events : 1191

Device Role : Active device 0
   Array State : AA ('A' == active, '.' == missing)

Then I tried mdadm --assemble --scan. I checked mdstat and it shows md124 with one spare drive (sda5). So I tried to stop /dev/md124 and assemble again:
mdadm --stop /dev/md124
mdadm --assemble --scan

mdstat shows /dev/md124 as active RAID on sda5, so I mounted it to /var and it works.

Then I tried to reboot and repeat these steps again ... but some magic happend and it stopped to boot right after kernel selection (GRUB).
Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view
system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again
to boot into default mode.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):
So I rebooted it again and some magic happend second time and it boots correctly!! :) All RAID1 arrays are degraded off course.

After next reboots I'm getting another problem. It can't mount /var.

I found this bug report but it's not resolved ... https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1098611

My journal (trimmed):
