[SOLVED] Samba failing to start after running update

Post by chop88 » 2015/07/17 22:51:15

Hi all,

In need of some dire help. I've spent the last 3 hrs searching for fixes and non have helped me.
Have a centos 7 vm with samba. I ran some updates and now samba won't start.

service smb restart yields

Code: Select all

Redirecting to /bin/systemctl restart smb.service
Job for smb.service failed. See 'systemctl status smb.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
service smb status yields

Code: Select all

Redirecting to /bin/systemctl status smb.service
smb.service - Samba SMB Daemon
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/smb.service; enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2015-07-17 18:46:29 EDT; 38s ago
  Process: 2395 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/smbd $SMBDOPTIONS (code=exited, status=127)
 Main PID: 2395 (code=exited, status=127)

Jul 17 18:46:29 HOST smbd[2395]: /usr/sbin/smbd: error while loading shared libraries: /lib64/libavahi-common.so.3: file too short
Jul 17 18:46:29 HOST systemd[1]: smb.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=127/n/a
Jul 17 18:46:29 HOST systemd[1]: Failed to start Samba SMB Daemon.
Jul 17 18:46:29 HOST systemd[1]: Unit smb.service entered failed state.
Any help would be highly appreciated as I have run out of options and I was really trying to stay away from a rebuild.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The error message you have there seems to show that you have a corrupted file /lib64/libavahi-common.so.3. when I run rpm -qf /lib64/libavahi-common.so.3 then it tells me that that file belongs to avahi-libs-0.6.31-14.el7.x86_64. Try running rpm -V avahi-libs to check if that agrees - it will verify all files that belong to that package are how they should be. A simple yum reinstall avahi-libs should fix it but you might want to investigate how it got "too short" in the first place before you reinstall that package.

Oh man unbelievable! Thank you so much TrevorH!

Here's what I did.

Ran: rpm -qf /lib64/libavahi-common.so.3 and got

Code: Select all

avahi-libs-0.6.31-14.el7.x86_64
Then ran: rpm -V avahi-libs and got

Code: Select all

S.5...... /usr/lib64/libavahi-client.so.3.2.9
S.5...... /usr/lib64/libavahi-common.so.3.5.3
So I ran: yum reinstall avahi-libs as you suggested and that FIXED IT! Thanks so much!

It got screwed up after I ran some scripts on this server from a different server that is running a trial appliance.
AND THAT boys and girls is why you don't run testing on production servers without backups.
Whew! This one was a close one. I think I will take a backup of this guy now.

Thanks again TrevorH saved me a rebuild.
