In-place upgrade is not advised

Post by fxtoruan@bit.net.id » 2015/08/08 08:23:46

i'm preparing to upgrade my CentOS6 to 7. and follow the track of in-place upgrade process from Nam Huy. After preupg, i got a warning 'In-place upgrade is not advised" due to the existence of 2 'inplacerisk:extreme'-s, both regarding x11 session manager.
Is it possible to still continue the upgrade, and address the x11 problem later? And how to do that?
Attached below is the result of my preupg commands.

Thank you.

# preupg
Preupg tool doesn't do the actual upgrade.
Please ensure you have backed up your system and/or data in the event of a failed upgrade
that would require a full re-install of the system from installation media.

Re: In-place upgrade is not advised

The upgrade from CentOS 6 to 7 is a process that is fraught with danger and very very untested. Almost no-one succeeds without extreme effort. The CentOS wiki page about it has a big fat warning saying "Do not do this". If at all possible you should do a parallel install, migrate your data, apps and settings to the new box and decommission the old one.

The problem comes about because there are a large number of packages in el6 that already have a higher version number than those in el7. This means that the el6 packages take precedence in the update and there are quite a few orphans left behind and these break lilttle things like yum. For example, one that I know about is openldap which is openldap-2.4.40-5.el6.x86_64 and openldap-2.4.39-6.el7.x86_64 so the el6 package is seen as newer than the el7 one. Anything that's linked against openldap (a *lot*) now will not function until that package is replaced with its el7 equivalent, The easiest way to do this would be to yum downgrade openldap but, ooops, one of the things that needs openldap is yum so it doesn't work.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Big thanks to you, Mr. Trevor,

It's very enlightening. So, i think i'll have to wait for further developments in upgrade processes. Or, prepare for a fresh new installation . . .

Hi,
As now it already one year, is the upgrade process smooth now? I have a production machine which is running around 50 sites under apache with CentOS 6.7. Is it advisable to upgrade to 7.1 in production machine ? If not what other options I have? Please advise.

No. The upgrade tool is orphaned and no-one is currently maintaining it so it's just as broken, if not more so, than it was a year ago.
