Is Python 2.6.6 available from CentOS base repo still maintained?

Post by Abhi21 » 2016/12/13 20:29:25

Hi,

I have a compliance related question and hope to get some clarification via this forum.

We are running CentOS 6.8(2.6.32-642.el6.x86_64 #1) which has been fully patched from CentOS Base repository. The latest version of Python installed on the server is python-2.6.6-66.el6_8.x86_64 and there are no more updates available from the base repo.

As per the following from Python.org, all Python Versions 2.6.* are end of life and obsolete since 2013. https://mail.python.org/pipermail/pytho ... 28287.html

My question is, that is the Version we get from CentOS update still being supported and is not in any sort of regulatory violation from being used. If yes, then is there any official centos documentation which we can refer to?

or, if this is not the case and all Versions 2.6.* are in fact obsolete, then why hasn't CentOS base repo making latest supported versions (2.7 or 3.X) available to users?

Many thanks,

~ Abhi

Yes, that version is still supported by Red Hat. Red Hat's backporting page describes the process. The example discusses PHP, but the same concepts apply for Python.
