Replacing Debian with CentOS

Post by Rymsantana » 2018/09/10 20:01:13

Hi, I'm new to Linux and looking for my best option install the Debian OS on my new to be Server. After I learned that it wouldn't work and decided to replace it with CentOS. Installation works at first and then it goes into a black screen and nothing happens. Please helps I've restarted the installation about 20 times since yesterday and the same thing happens.

You posted this in the CentOS 6 subforum, so I'm assuming you are trying to install CentOS 6(.10).

Unless you have some specific requirements to use CentOS 6, I would suggest trying CentOS 7 instead. It has a longer lifetime and the packages are newer.

I'm trying to install the I386 version and didn't see one for CentOS 7. Is there one? it would be great!

Firstly, there was never support for i386 in CentOS 6. There is support for i686 hardware.

Why do you need to install a 32-bit OS? You can run 32-bit programs on a 64-bit OS. You just need to ensure the appropriate libraries are installed.

Also, why do you need to run 32-bit programs?

Moved to the CentOS 7 forums since this appears to be a CentOS 7 install after all.

There is a 32 bit edition of CentOS 7 but if your hardware supports 64 bit - and 99% of Intel compatible processors released since 2005 do - then you are far better off using the 64 bit edition.
CentOS 5 died in March 2017 - migrate NOW!

Thanks, I found it by searching it on google. I'm just turning an old windows xp 32bits computer into a server.
What made it look like there was no 32bits version of CentOS 7 was that the Get CentOS Now link on main site automatically filters results to the 64 bits structure only.
I already installed it. Thanks.

Please note that there is no EPEL available for i686, and most other 3rd party repositories do not support i686 architecture either.

So you are basically limited to the packages available in the CentOS base repository.

Oh yes, there was or at least there is now lOL. I downloaded and installed the i386 version of CentOS 6 NetInstall here http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/6/isos/i386/

I don't know nothing about Linux. I'm a totally newbie on this, but my computer was 32bit Windows, so I figured I needed 32 bits OS again.

Maybe I should try the 64 bit and see if it works

See if it works.

There were good reasons that people stayed on 32-bit versions of Windows long after most of the Linux world had moved to 64-bit.
