/etc/dconf/db/gdm is missing on new Centos 7.6 1810 build (gdm.x86_64 1:3.28.2-10.el7)

Hello All.

I have run into a wall in reinstalling Centos 7 on a number HP EliteDesk 800 G2 desktop workstations.

The install problems this time have been legion but the major wall I am hitting at this point is the GDM manager. (gdm.x86_64 1:3.28.2-10.el7, specifically)

These rigs have two graphics cards (which is another source of problems)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530 (rev 06)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 730] (rev a1)

I am getting the following error

Code: Select all

Jan 13 21:32:13 sundog.ias.sdsmt.edu at-spi-bus-laun[6715]: unable to open file '/etc/dconf/db/gdm': Failed to open file “/etc/dconf/db/gdm”: open() failed: No such file or directory; expect degraded performance

An indeed this file appears to be missing. The file is missing also before any attempts at knife-fighting the graphics cards (which on these HPs has always been highly problematic).

We can function nominally with multi-user.target for the moment but classroom tech requirements will require graphical desktops in the next week or so. (And as you can guess management is proud of the money they save by not giving HPC users on campus the necessary technology support).

Please Advice.

Cheers and Thanks,

According to RedHat, this is due to a rebase of Gnome in 7.6

I can't solve this for you as I don't know Gnome but you may have better luck installing 7.5

It says it's been done by design and the solution is:

Create the /etc/dconf/db/gdm.d/ directory manually. Files in this directory are still taken into account.
CentOS 5 died in March 2017 - migrate NOW!

Thanks Much Trevor.

With that info I was able to get through that. (Time to tackle the next mole in the whack-a-system game.).

I was able to resolve this problem the above guidance and some additional sweat equity towards the video drivers.

The after an additional run at installing the NVidia drivers and disabling the Intel drivers, all machines booted without the directory and customizing the directory afterwards created the desired results in the login screen.

I can color this specific matter closed from my perspective. [Still fighting with NIS Clients]

Thanks much, Trevor.
