Is there a CentOS 5 ServerCD???

Postby KMorley » 2007/06/04 16:22:19

I'm a big fan of the CentOS ServerCD's that we've become accustomed to with previous CentOS versions. In fact, the lack of a ServerCD is the biggest impediment for our company upgrading our servers to CentOS 5.

Is there a CentOS 5 ServerCD "hidden" someplace that I just haven't found yet? If so, where can I find it? If not, I hope there's a ServerCD in the works.

Thanks!

I don't know what you mean by "Server CD". What you can do: install a minimal system without X11 or anything - as described on the WIKI - and then install whatever you want.

If you want more detail, I took some notes. I always start from a very minimal install, then add whatever I need:

CentOS has posted ServerCDs for earlier releases. I have 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 sitting in front of me. These ServerCDs contained everything on one CD and made server installation a snap. Few questions, a single CD and quick.

I appreciate your suggestion about the minimal install, but that still requires that you download and have available multiple CD's. If you support 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 like I do, that might require carrying 15 CD's or so instead of just 3 ServerCD's. It's certainly an option, but not as attractive as the ServerCDs that CentOS provided with previous releases.

Thanks for your response.

Install CentOS 5.3 Server from a single CD
(requires internet connection and is fairly quick with a fast/local mirror)

1 - Download the first ISO CD and burn it, from a mirror such as:
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/centos/5.3/os ... n-1of6.iso

2 - On boot prompt type: linux askmethod text
(and later choose text versus UMC)

3 - Choose your language and keyboard type

4 - For Installation Method, select HTTP

5 - Configure TCP/IP

6 - Enter HTTP setup parameters for a mirror, such as:
Web site name : ftp.osuosl.org
CentOS Directory: /pub/centos/5.3/os/i386

Note: from a list of mirrors, use a site which begans with
http:// *not* ftp://
Note: use /os/ *not* /isos/

7 - Test CD (or skip it)

8 - Use test mode (versus Start VNC)

9 - Wait a little while for the welcome screen

10 - Initialize the hard drive and partitions

11 - Configure the network interface & hostname

12 - Select timezone & set root password

13 - For package selection:
-- select Server
-- deselect all other tasks
-- deselect customize software selection

Note: maybe other tasks and customizations are possible,
I just didn't test them.

14 - Proceed with installation (apparently packages not on the 1st CD are downloaded from the mirror)

Simple, without the need for 6 CD's and pretty fast (using local mirrors).

Or - just get the netinstall cd for the desired arch:

-rw-r--r-- 2 503 503 8701952 Mar 21 11:05 CentOS-5.3-i386-netinstall.iso
-rw-r--r-- 2 503 503 9103360 Mar 21 09:18 CentOS-5.3-x86_64-netinstall.iso

Much smaller than CD#1 if you want to do a network install.

Can do a minimal install from CD#1 if you deselect enough packages.
