14:03:46 <bstinson> that doesn't sound fun
14:06:01 <bstinson> anything else going on this week? Arrfab have you and alphacc had a chance to talk about the upgrades you wanted to do in CBS?

14:10:36 <bstinson> ok thanks, we'll check back in every now and then. but i don't think this is something pressing

14:24:57 <bstinson> #info CBS Tags requested (to be done this week)
14:25:02 <bstinson> all caught up
14:25:05 <bstinson> #topic CI
14:25:12 <bstinson> anyone here to talk about CI?
14:29:02 <bstinson> if not
14:29:06 <bstinson> #topic Open Floor
14:29:10 <bstinson> what else do we have for today?
14:31:35 <gwd> bstinson: Not sure if this is the right venue for this; but I'm trying to figure out the best option to get the Xen packages built with a retpoline-capable compiler
14:32:18 <gwd> bstinson: Could I just steal a gcc package from another project that has the backported functionality (perhaps named 'gcc-retpoline'), and add that to the BuildRequires?
14:32:51 <gwd> (If this is not the right venue, a hint as to what the right one might be would be appreciated)
14:33:16 <bstinson> gwd: this could be the right place. has someone already built a standalone gcc for that? otherwise, i wonder if that's something you could use devtoolset for
14:34:22 <gwd> bstinson: AIUI devtoolstack has gcc 7.2.x; the retpoline functionality was backported to 7.3. Is that something we could get updated?
14:34:41 <kbsingh> one thing I would recommend is that if there is going to be a gcc rebase to that level - ie. such a chance - it might be good to rebuild everything in the repos
14:35:00 <kbsingh> gwd: +1 to getting the request to rebase gcc in devtools
14:35:16 <kbsingh> but it might be a few months before that comes through - hhorak can confirm, but that team iterates every 4 to 6 months
14:35:35 <gwd> kbsingh: version> Someone said that SuSE had backported the retpoline patches to gcc 4.8, so that could be an option if we wanted things to be less disruptive.
14:36:20 <kbsingh> would that be a patch you'd carry off the distro gcc ?
14:37:05 <gwd> Well ideally I wouldn't want to maintain such a package myself indefinitely...
14:37:38 <gwd> Lots of other projects build their own kernels from upstream sources, don't they? It seems like I'm not the only one who could use this sort of thing. :-)
14:38:01 <gwd> I'd be happy to help explore getting it set up but I'd rather not continue to maintain it if possible.
14:38:12 <bstinson> so we have 2 requests here, 1 for building Xen and 1 for doing a mass rebuild across content in CBS
14:38:37 <bstinson> gwd: do you mind doing a little more exploration on what options we have in terms of enabled compilers for next week?
14:40:01 <gwd> bstinson: Sure; but before I do that I need more input what technical / logistical options are possible or preferred.
14:40:37 <gwd> For example, could I take the upstream CentOS gcc packages, add a retpoline patch (if I can find one), build Virt SIG-specific packages, and then use those?
14:41:04 <bstinson> well i see 3 options:
14:41:07 <gwd> Hopefully the next time those packages are updated they'd include RHEL's retpoline backports, in which case maintainin a package wouldn't be too bad.
14:41:48 <bstinson> - build a vanilla GCC in CBS, and we plumb that in to some of the build targets (please no, but if we have to...)
14:42:04 <bstinson> - find a reasonable patchset to the distro GCC and carry that around until RHEL releases its backports
14:42:16 <bstinson> - get something into devtoolset and rely on that going forward
14:43:06 <gwd> In the case of #2, then we wouldn't need to do a full rebuild; but #1 and #3 kbsingh thinks a full rebuild of the Virt SIG packages would reduce risk of incompatibilities?
14:43:20 <kbsingh> yeah
14:43:56 <gwd> OK, let me see what I can do.
14:44:28 <bstinson> i'll put this as a followup topic for next week
14:45:31 <gwd> OK, thanks
14:47:18 <bstinson> anything else we should bring up this week?
14:49:23 <bstinson> if not i'll close this out in 1 minute
14:51:24 <bstinson> thanks all!
